Big Shakeup in Nifty 50: Jio Financial & Zomato Enter, BPCL & Britannia Exit

Mumbai, February 21, 2025: The National Stock Exchange (NSE) has announced major changes to the Nifty 50 index as part of its semi-annual review. Effective from March 28, 2025 (post-market close on March 27, 2025), Bharat Petroleum Corporation Ltd. (BPCL) and Britannia Industries Ltd. (BRITANNIA) will be excluded from the index. Replacing them will be Jio Financial Services Ltd. (JIOFIN) and Zomato Ltd. (ZOMATO).

Details of the Replacements

Excluded Companies:

1. Bharat Petroleum Corporation Ltd. (BPCL)

2. Britannia Industries Ltd. (BRITANNIA)

Included Companies:

1. Jio Financial Services Ltd. (JIOFIN)

2. Zomato Ltd. (ZOMATO)

Reasons for the ChangesT:he index rebalancing is based on the eligibility criteria, which require newly included stocks to have a free-float market capitalization at least 1.5 times that of the smallest constituent in the index.

Zomato Ltd. has an average free-float market capitalization of Rs. 1,69,837 crores.

Jio Financial Services Ltd. has an average free-float market capitalization of Rs. 1,04,387 crores.

The excluded stocks had significantly lower market capitalizations:

BPCL: Rs. 60,928 crores

Britannia Industries: Rs. 64,151 crores

Consideration of Other StocksI:nterGlobe Aviation Ltd. (Rs. 86,688 crores) and Hindustan Aeronautics Ltd. (Rs. 82,993 crores) were also evaluated but did not meet the inclusion criteria as their market capitalization was lower than the required threshold.

Impact on Nifty 50 Equal Weight IndexT:he same changes will also apply to the Nifty 50 Equal Weight Index, ensuring alignment with the primary Nifty 50 index.
