The 20th G20 Summit, held in Johannesburg, South Africa, brought together leaders from major global economies at a time when concerns are rising about the future role of the G20 in global multilateral governance. Under the theme of “solidarity, equality and sustainability,” the summit focused on global economic challenges, cooperation, and strengthening collective decision-making.
China played an active role in the high-level discussions. Premier Li Qiang attended and addressed the summit, presenting China’s vision for a more cooperative and inclusive global economic framework. He highlighted that since the establishment of the G20 two decades ago, the group has consistently contributed to addressing global crises and promoting development by upholding one crucial principle: solidarity.
Premier Li stressed that the world economy is once again at a critical juncture. Rising unilateralism and protectionist tendencies have disrupted global trade, supply chains, and international cooperation. He urged G20 members to return to the spirit of solidarity and coordination in order to face shared challenges effectively.
According to Premier Li, the world economy today is deeply interconnected, leaving no country able to prosper in isolation. He emphasized that openness and cooperation remain the only sustainable pathways toward mutual benefit and long-term growth. At the summit, he called on the G20 to firmly defend free trade and strive for an open and fair global economic system.
Li Qiang also noted that differences between nations should not become barriers to cooperation, nor should they be used as justification for unilateral suppression. Instead, legitimate concerns from all sides must be addressed through equal-footed dialogue and consultation.
China urged G20 members to take the lead in safeguarding multilateralism, amplifying the voices of developing countries, and advocating for a more equitable international economic and trade order. Premier Li reiterated China’s readiness to work with all parties in solidarity, taking concrete and consistent actions aimed at reforming and improving global governance, promoting economic growth, and shaping a prosperous shared future.
