India's 5G rollout is progressing at an impressive pace, with services now available in 773 out of 776 districts across the country, including Lakshadweep. The government has undertaken several crucial initiatives to accelerate the deployment of 5G services, ensuring wider coverage and improved connectivity
Key Government Initiatives for 5G Expansion
To facilitate the rapid expansion of 5G networks, the government has implemented the following measures:
1. Auction of Spectrum for 5G Mobile Services
The allocation of spectrum through auctions has provided a strong foundation for 5G deployment across India.
2. Financial Reforms for Telecom Operators
The government has introduced financial reforms aimed at rationalizing Adjusted Gross Revenue (AGR), Bank Guarantees (BGs), and interest rates to ease financial stress on telecom operators.
3. Elimination of Spectrum Usage Charges
To promote investment in 5G infrastructure, Spectrum Usage Charges (SUC) for spectrum acquired in the 2022 auction and beyond have been removed. This step reduces the financial burden on telecom providers and encourages faster expansion.
4. Simplified SACFA Clearance Process
The Standing Advisory Committee on Radio Frequency Allocations (SACFA) clearance process has been simplified, making it easier for telecom operators to deploy 5G infrastructure.
5. PM GatiShakti Sanchar Portal for RoW Permissions
The PM GatiShakti Sanchar portal has been launched to streamline Right of Way (RoW) permissions, ensuring a hassle-free and efficient clearance process for telecom infrastructure installation.
6. Time-Bound Approvals for Street Furniture Usage
The government has introduced time-bound permissions for using street furniture to install small cells and telecommunication lines, ensuring faster and more seamless network expansion.
5G Deployment Status Across India
As of February 28, 2025, a total of 4.69 lakh 5G Base Transceiver Stations (BTSs) have been installed by various Telecom Service Providers (TSPs) across the country. The rollout has surpassed minimum regulatory requirements, demonstrating strong industry participation and government support.
Future Expansion and Challenges
While the expansion of 5G has been significant, further growth depends on the techno-commercial decisions of TSPs. The availability of affordable 5G devices, last-mile connectivity, and infrastructure development in remote areas will be crucial factors in achieving 100% coverage.
The Indian government’s proactive approach in reforming telecom policies, removing financial bottlenecks, and introducing tech-driven solutions has propelled the nationwide rollout of 5G. With near-complete coverage, India is on track to unlock the full potential of 5G technology, fostering innovation, digital transformation, and economic growth.
