India’s Diplomatic Response to Pahalgam Attack: What Could Happen Next?

In a tragic and heart-wrenching turn of events, yesterday's heinous terrorist attack in Pahalgam has shaken the nation. With 27 innocent Indian tourists losing their lives to a brutal assault allegedly orchestrated by Pakistan-based terror outfits, public outrage has reached a boiling point. In response, the Government of India is reportedly considering a series of strong diplomatic and strategic steps against Pakistan.

1. Diplomatic Fallout: Recalling Diplomats and Expelling Pakistan’s Envoy

One of the most immediate and symbolic responses could be the withdrawal of Indian diplomatic personnel from Islamabad. Simultaneously, the Pakistani High Commissioner in New Delhi may be expelled, along with the reclamation of the land allocated to the Pakistan High Commission.

2. Revisiting the Indus Waters Treaty

India may also suspend the Indus Waters Treaty—a long-standing water-sharing agreement that has survived wars and political turmoil.

3. Visa Ban for Pakistani Nationals

Another likely move could be a complete halt on visa issuance to Pakistani citizens.

4. Closure of the Kartarpur Corridor

The Kartarpur corridor, a symbolic link allowing Indian pilgrims to visit the holy Sikh shrine in Pakistan without a visa, may be shut down immediately.

5. Trade Embargo—Direct and Indirect

India might go beyond mere diplomatic condemnation by imposing a comprehensive ban on trade with Pakistan

6. End to Border Diplomacy and Ceremonies

To further distance itself, India may also stop participating in ceremonial military events such as the Wagah Border flag-lowering ceremony and the Beating Retreat.

These potential moves—while strong—are deeply rooted in the national sentiment of grief, anger, and an unyielding demand for justice. As the nation mourns the loss of 27 innocent lives in Pahalgam, the coming days may witness a pivotal shift in India-Pakistan relations.
