China has strongly condemned the United States’ latest large-scale arms sales to Taiwan, warning that the move severely undermines regional peace and stability and interferes in China’s internal affairs.
Responding to a question from Global Times regarding foreign media reports that the U.S. arms package was intended to “assist Taiwan in maintaining sufficient self-defence capabilities,” Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesperson Guo Jiakun reiterated China’s firm opposition to the decision.
Guo stated that China had already made its serious position clear on the issue a day earlier. He said the U.S.’s massive arms sales to China’s Taiwan region grossly interfere in China’s internal affairs, undermine China’s sovereignty, security and territorial integrity, disrupt peace and stability in the Taiwan Strait, and send a seriously wrong message to “Taiwan independence” separatist forces and other external actors.
China, he said, strongly deplores and firmly opposes the move and has immediately lodged serious protests with the U.S. side.
Emphasizing China’s red lines, Guo stressed that China’s core interests must not be eroded, the Taiwan question must not be interfered in, and China’s bottom line must not be crossed. He stated that “Taiwan independence” and cross-Strait peace are fundamentally irreconcilable, describing them as being as incompatible as fire and water. According to him, any move to arm Taiwan will inevitably face serious consequences.
The spokesperson further pointed out that the real threat to peace and stability in the Taiwan Strait comes from separatist activities by the Lai Ching-te authorities and external interference. He said the so-called “assistance in response to threat” will only embolden “Taiwan independence” separatist forces, place the people of Taiwan on a “powder keg,” push the Taiwan Strait toward greater danger, and significantly increase the risk of confrontation and conflict between China and the United States.
Guo also warned against underestimating China’s resolve, stating that no one or force should underestimate the strong will and capability of the Chinese government and people to safeguard national sovereignty and territorial integrity. He added that regardless of how many advanced weapons are sold to Taiwan, such actions will not reverse what China views as the historical inevitability of national reunification.
China, he said, will take all measures necessary to safeguard its sovereignty and territorial integrity.
Concluding his remarks, Guo urged the United States to abide by the one-China principle and the three China-U.S. joint communiqués, honor the serious commitments made by U.S. leaders, stop the dangerous move of arming Taiwan, cease disrupting peace and stability in the Taiwan Strait, and stop sending wrong signals to “Taiwan independence” separatist forces.
