China’s 42nd Antarctic Scientific Expedition Highlights Spirit of International Cooperation

China’s 42nd Antarctic scientific expedition is currently underway, drawing attention not only for its use of advanced scientific technologies but also for several heartwarming stories that underline the spirit of international cooperation in the polar regions.

According to reports, the Chinese expedition team recently extended assistance to a sick staff member from a Russian research station operating in Antarctica. In another example of cooperation, China’s icebreaker Xuelong provided logistical support to the Republic of Korea’s Antarctic scientific expedition team by helping transport their members when the vessel docked in New Zealand for resupply earlier this week. These gestures have been widely seen as examples of mutual support among countries conducting research in the harsh and challenging polar environment.

Responding to these developments, Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesperson Mao Ning said that such cooperation reflects China’s long-standing approach to polar research. She noted that over the past 40-plus years since China began its Antarctic scientific expeditions, the country has consistently acted in the spirit of mutual assistance, placed great importance on international cooperation, and carried out joint research in multiple forms with other nations.

Mao Ning also highlighted that China’s current Antarctic expedition has a strong international dimension. Researchers from more than ten countries and regions, including Thailand, Chile, and Portugal, are participating in China’s 42nd Antarctic scientific expedition. Their involvement reflects the growing openness and inclusiveness of China’s polar research programs.

Beyond Antarctica, China has also been actively engaged in Arctic affairs. Mao Ning stated that China has worked to provide platforms for dialogue and cooperation and to share scientific research outcomes with the international community. These efforts include participation in relevant work under the Arctic Council framework, hosting the China-Nordic Arctic Cooperation Symposium, and conducting scientific expeditions in the Arctic Ocean.

Emphasizing the broader significance of these efforts, Mao Ning said that peace, stability, and sustainable development in the polar regions serve the common interests of all humanity. She added that China stands ready to strengthen exchanges and promote deeper cooperation with all parties in polar affairs, with the goal of advancing scientific understanding and protecting fragile polar ecosystems.

The recent stories from Antarctica and New Zealand illustrate how scientific research in extreme environments can transcend national boundaries, reinforcing cooperation, trust, and shared responsibility among countries committed to polar exploration and environmental stewardship.
