Tensions between France and Russia have increased after the French Navy seized the oil tanker Tagor in the Atlantic Ocean on May 31 during an operation linked to international sanctions enforcement.
French President Emmanuel Macron confirmed the operation in a post on social media, stating that the tanker was intercepted on the high seas in the Atlantic Ocean. According to Macron, the operation was conducted with support from several international partners, including the United Kingdom.
The vessel, identified as the Tagor tanker, has attracted attention due to its links to Russian shipping activities. Data from maritime monitoring platform VesselFinder showed that the tanker sails under the flag of Madagascar. The ship reportedly made its last port call in Murmansk, Russia, in early May before beginning its latest voyage.
Questions surrounding the tanker’s crew and ownership have emerged following the seizure. According to preliminary information shared by Russia’s embassy in Paris through statements reported by TASS, the captain of the Tagor tanker is a Russian citizen.
Russian diplomats said they have officially requested information from French authorities regarding the identities and nationalities of all crew members aboard the vessel. The embassy also stated that French authorities did not provide prior notification to Russian diplomatic representatives regarding actions taken against the tanker.
Russia has since demanded explanations from France over the seizure, raising concerns about the legal basis and circumstances surrounding the operation. The incident adds to growing geopolitical tensions between Western nations and Moscow as sanctions enforcement activities expand into international maritime routes.
The seizure may also intensify discussions over shipping routes, sanctions enforcement in international waters, and the increasing monitoring of vessels suspected of transporting sanctioned cargo.
As of now, French authorities have not publicly released detailed information regarding the cargo onboard, the vessel’s final destination, or the duration of the detention.
