In a rapidly developing regional crisis, tensions between India and Pakistan have sharply escalated over the past three nights, with a barrage of suspected drone attacks originating from Pakistan into Indian territory. Defence officials have confirmed that over 300-400 Turkish-made drones were launched by Pakistan in a significant escalation. These drones targeted areas stretching from Leh in the north to Sir Creek in the south.
The Indian defence establishment has reported sightings and interceptions of drones at 26 locations, including key border and Line of Control (LoC) areas. These locations include Baramulla, Srinagar, Avantipora, Nagrota, Jammu, Ferozpur, Pathankot, Fazilka, Lalgarh Jatta, Jaisalmer, Barmer, Bhuj, Kuarbet, and Lakhi Nala. Officials say these drones include both surveillance and suspected armed variants, posing serious threats to civilian and military targets.
One drone was shot down near Srinagar Airport with no reported casualties, while another attack in Ferozpur, Punjab, resulted in injuries to members of a local family. Security forces have since sanitised the area and provided medical assistance to the injured.
Despite the lack of formal communication between the National Security Advisers (NSAs) of the two countries—confirmed by Pakistan’s Inter-Services Public Relations (ISPR)—reports of diplomatic outreach are emerging. Pakistan’s Foreign Ministry earlier claimed contact had been established, a statement now contradicted by ISPR.
Meanwhile, Saudi Arabia has stepped into the fray in an apparent bid to mediate the escalating tensions. Saudi Deputy Foreign Minister Adel Al-Jubeir, who visited New Delhi yesterday, held talks with Pakistan’s Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif today in Islamabad. Pakistan Army Chief General Asim Munir was also present during the meeting. According to Pakistan's readout, the country "appreciated the diplomatic efforts of the Saudi government aimed at reducing tensions," while reiterating its commitment to defending its sovereignty and territorial integrity.
As tensions remain high, both countries appear to be bracing for further developments, with the international community closely watching for signs of either de-escalation or further confrontation.
