In a significant development, Mehli Mistry has stepped down as a trustee of Tata Trusts. In his statement, Mistry described it as a privilege to have served as a trustee and expressed deep respect and admiration for Ratan N Tata, referring to him as his “dearest friend and mentor.”
Mistry stated that his decision was guided by the spirit of Ratan Tata, “who always put public interest before his own.” He noted that it had been an honor to serve under Tata’s leadership and vision of transparency, good governance, and integrity.
He added that he had returned to Mumbai and wanted to clarify his position amid recent speculative reports regarding his trusteeship. Mistry mentioned that his letter aims to “assist in putting the quietus on speculative news reports,” emphasizing that his decision was taken in the best interests of Tata Trusts.
In his letter to Tata Trusts Chair Noel Tata, Mehli Mistry wrote that “precipitating matters would cause irreparable harm to the reputation of Tata Trusts.” He urged other trustees to continue upholding the principles of “transparency, good governance, and public interest” in their decisions and actions.
Mistry reiterated his commitment to Ratan Tata’s vision, saying it includes a responsibility to ensure that the Tata Trusts are not drawn into unnecessary controversies. He highlighted the Trusts’ long-standing legacy of integrity, service, and philanthropy, noting that every trustee must protect and preserve this reputation.
He also quoted Ratan Tata’s guiding principle: “Nobody is bigger than the institution it serves.”
Mehli Mistry concluded his note by saying it has been a privilege to serve as a trustee until October 28 and hoped that his departure would help maintain the Tata Trusts’ focus on their core mission of service, transparency, and public good.
