US-China Trade Tensions Rise as Trump Targets Rare Earths, Fentanyl, and Soybeans

The ongoing trade tensions between the United States and China have once again taken center stage after U.S. President Donald Trump announced a fresh wave of tariffs on Chinese goods. According to reports, Trump said the U.S. has listed rare earths, fentanyl, and soybeans as its top three issues with China, just before the two sides prepare to return to the negotiating table.

China’s Foreign Ministry spokesperson, Guo Jiakun, responded to the remarks during a press briefing, emphasizing that China’s position on economic and trade issues with the U.S. remains consistent and clear. Guo stated that “tariff and trade wars do not serve any party’s interest,” adding that both countries should address their differences through “consultation on the basis of equality, respect, and mutual benefit.”

Tensions intensified after President Trump recently announced a 100% tariff on all Chinese imports, effective November 1. The move comes as Washington accuses Beijing of continuing to buy oil aggressively from Russia, which the U.S. claims undermines its sanctions and global energy market stability.

The new tariffs mark a sharp escalation in the trade conflict, potentially impacting industries from technology to agriculture. Analysts warn that the measures could increase inflationary pressures in the U.S. while further straining China’s export-driven economy.

Despite the rising tensions, diplomatic channels remain open. According to some sources, President Trump is expected to visit China in early 2026 to hold high-level talks aimed at easing trade frictions and restoring balance in the bilateral relationship.

Observers suggest that while both sides may seek to avoid a prolonged trade war, the road to resolution remains uncertain. The coming months will be crucial in determining whether the two largest economies can find common ground amid growing geopolitical and economic challenges.
