China Leads Global Renewable Energy Boom as Science Names It Top Breakthrough of 2025

China’s leadership in renewable energy has received fresh international recognition after Science Magazine ranked the “seemingly unstoppable growth of renewable energy” as the top scientific breakthrough of 2025, citing China as a principal driver of this transformation.

Responding to a question from Beijing Youth Daily, Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesperson Lin Jian said the assessment once again demonstrates that China’s contribution to the global green energy transition is widely acknowledged.

According to Lin Jian, green development is a defining feature of China’s modernization path. Over the past decade, China has established what it describes as the world’s most complete policy framework for carbon emissions reduction, alongside the largest renewable energy system globally. This system spans solar, wind, hydropower, and emerging energy storage technologies, forming the backbone of China’s low-carbon transition.

One of the most notable milestones highlighted by the spokesperson is China’s rapid expansion in new energy storage. Installed capacity has exceeded 100 million kilowatts, accounting for more than 40 percent of global capacity. This scale, Lin said, places China among the countries with the fastest reductions in energy intensity worldwide, reflecting improved efficiency across industrial and economic activity.

China’s role extends beyond domestic deployment. During the 14th Five-Year Plan period, Chinese exports of wind power and photovoltaic products helped other countries reduce carbon dioxide emissions by an estimated 4.1 billion tonnes. These exports have been particularly significant for developing economies seeking affordable and scalable clean energy solutions.

Lin Jian also emphasized China’s engagement with the Global South. As of October this year, China has signed 55 memorandums of understanding on climate change cooperation with 43 developing countries. In addition, China has carried out more than 300 capacity-building programs and provided over 10,000 training opportunities for participants from more than 120 developing countries, focusing on renewable energy deployment, climate governance, and green technology application.

The recognition by Science Magazine comes at a time when renewable energy is increasingly seen as central to both economic growth and climate resilience. With China leading global production of solar cells, wind turbines, and lithium batteries, Beijing positions its green development strategy not only as a national priority but also as a contribution to global sustainable development and climate action.
