China has firmly rejected what it described as wrongful statements made by Japan, Australia, an agency of the European Union, and some European countries regarding China’s recent military drills near the Taiwan Island.
Responding to a question from CCTV, Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesperson Lin Jian said that China has lodged serious protests with the countries and institution concerned. According to Lin, these parties have chosen to turn a blind eye to what China calls the massive military buildup attempts by separatist forces advocating “Taiwan independence,” while remaining silent on what Beijing views as external interference in China’s internal affairs. Instead, they have criticized China for taking what it considers just and necessary actions to defend its sovereignty and territorial integrity. Lin described such behavior as absolute hypocrisy and a distortion of facts.
The spokesperson reiterated that Taiwan is an inalienable part of China’s territory and stressed that the Taiwan question is purely China’s internal affair, which allows no external interference. He said the fundamental status quo of the Taiwan Strait is that both sides of the Strait belong to one and the same China.
Lin further stated that the biggest threat to peace and stability in the Taiwan Strait does not come from China’s military activities, but from the separatist activities of “Taiwan independence” forces and the external connivance and support behind them. He emphasized that safeguarding national sovereignty and territorial integrity is a legitimate right of any sovereign country.
The spokesperson also underlined that the one-China principle is a prevailing international consensus and a basic norm governing international relations. He noted that it serves as the political foundation for China’s diplomatic relations with 183 countries worldwide. Japan, Australia, and certain European countries, Lin said, made clear commitments to the one-China principle when they established diplomatic ties with China.
China has once again urged these countries and institution to honor their commitments, stop interfering in China’s internal affairs, and cease what it sees as aiding and abetting separatist activities aimed at “Taiwan independence.” Beijing maintains that any actions undermining the one-China principle threaten regional peace and stability and run counter to the commitments these countries have already made.
