Russian President Vladimir Putin issued a sharp warning to Western countries over growing military and geopolitical tensions in the Asia-Pacific region, saying Moscow would respond to any attempt to seize Russian merchant vessels.

Putin made the remarks aboard the missile cruiser Varyag during the conclusion of Pacific Fleet exercises, where he reviewed the fleet’s activities and addressed broader security developments surrounding Russia’s Far East.

According to Putin, NATO is increasingly expanding its presence and military activities into the Asia-Pacific region. He said plans by Western countries to deploy new weapons in the region represent a direct threat to Russia’s security.

The Russian president also warned that tensions are rising not only across the Asia-Pacific but also in the neighboring Arctic region, creating additional security challenges for Moscow.

Putin praised Pacific Fleet marines participating in Russia’s military operation in Ukraine, describing their conduct as bold, professional and heroic. He said the marines have demonstrated that there are no combat missions they cannot handle.

Putin Criticizes Japan’s Russia Policy

Putin also addressed Russia-Japan relations, criticizing Tokyo for imposing sanctions on Moscow following the outbreak of the Ukraine conflict.

He argued that Japan introduced what Russia considers unprovoked sanctions without taking into account what Moscow describes as the underlying causes of the conflict.

Putin stressed that Russia does not pose a threat to Japan and said Moscow has no grievances against Tokyo. However, he criticized Japan’s continuing territorial claims concerning the Kuril Islands.

According to Putin, Russian sovereignty over the islands is established within the post-World War II international order and reflected in relevant international documents.

The Russian president recalled that Moscow previously maintained constructive relations with former Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe and other Japanese leaders, but said Tokyo has since adopted a fundamentally different position toward Russia.

Warning Over Russian Merchant Ships

One of Putin’s strongest warnings concerned reports and plans involving restrictions on Russian commercial vessels.

Putin said authorities in certain Western countries are attempting to restrict the movement of Russian merchant ships in what Moscow considers a violation of international maritime law.

He warned that if Russian merchant vessels are seized, Russia would respond.

Putin said Moscow’s response would not necessarily be limited to the same waters where a Russian vessel was seized. He specifically warned that Russia could take action “anywhere,” including in the Pacific Ocean.

The Russian president characterized Western plans to seize Russian merchant vessels as “piracy and banditry,” signaling that Moscow views such actions as a serious escalation.

His comments come as Russia continues to emphasize the strategic importance of its Pacific Fleet and the Asia-Pacific region amid growing military competition involving NATO countries, Japan and other regional powers.

The Pacific Fleet exercises were aimed at demonstrating Russia’s readiness to operate across its eastern maritime approaches while highlighting Moscow’s concerns over what it sees as increasing Western military activity near Russian territory.
