China has strongly criticized the United States’ military action against Venezuela, reiterating its firm support for Venezuela’s sovereignty, security, and legitimate rights. The remarks came after Telesur raised a question during a press briefing regarding China’s position following an emergency meeting of the United Nations Security Council, where the majority of member states condemned the U.S. military strikes and voiced support for Venezuela.
Responding to the question, Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesperson Mao Ning said that the Security Council’s emergency meeting underscored broad international opposition to the use of force. China’s representative at the meeting stressed that military means are not the solution to international disputes and that the indiscriminate use of force would only intensify crises rather than resolve them.
China, Mao Ning said, firmly supports the government and people of Venezuela in safeguarding national sovereignty, security, and legitimate interests. Beijing also reaffirmed its support for regional countries in maintaining the status of Latin America and the Caribbean as a zone of peace. China expressed readiness to work closely with countries in the region and with the broader international community to jointly safeguard peace and stability.
Addressing concerns that other regional countries such as Cuba, Colombia, and Mexico could face similar pressure or intervention, Mao Ning emphasized that China believes all nations must respect the development paths chosen by the people of other countries. She stressed that countries should abide by international law and the purposes and principles of the UN Charter, adding that major countries in particular should set a responsible example.
China firmly opposes any country acting as the world’s police or judge, Mao Ning said, in an apparent reference to the actions of the United States. She reiterated that China advocates a vision of common, comprehensive, cooperative, and sustainable security, one that respects the sovereignty and territorial integrity of all countries, takes legitimate security concerns seriously, and promotes the peaceful resolution of disputes through dialogue and consultation.
According to Mao Ning, this approach represents China’s solution to global security challenges and its contribution toward building universal and common security. China stands ready to cooperate with other countries to defend the authority of international law, reject the law of the jungle, oppose interference in internal affairs, and jointly uphold world peace and stability.
