China Explains Diplomatic Engagement With Regional Ambassadors After Japanese PM’s Taiwan Remarks

China’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs has clarified the purpose behind its recent meetings with ambassadors from Southeast Asian and other countries stationed in Beijing, following controversial remarks on Taiwan made by Japanese Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi.

Responding to a question from Nippon TV, Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesperson Guo Jiakun stated that China’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs maintains normal working relations with embassies of all countries based in Beijing. He emphasized that such interactions are part of routine diplomatic communication and engagement.

Guo Jiakun stressed that the one-China principle is a universally recognized basic norm in international relations and represents a prevailing consensus of the international community, including Southeast Asian countries. He said that this principle forms the political foundation of China’s relations with other nations and is widely upheld across the region.

According to the spokesperson, the erroneous remarks on Taiwan made by Japanese Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi seriously violate international law and the basic norms governing international relations. He added that such remarks blatantly challenge the outcomes of the victory of World War II and undermine international justice established in the postwar order.

Guo Jiakun further warned that the dangerous trend of reviving Japanese militarism has placed regional countries and their peoples on high alert. He noted that defending the postwar international order, as well as upholding human conscience and justice, serves the common interests of all parties and is an unavoidable and necessary choice.

The spokesperson also pointed out that in recent days, many regional countries have once again clearly reiterated their commitment to the one-China principle. These countries have expressed opposition to “Taiwan independence,” support for China’s reunification, and heightened vigilance and resistance toward any possible revival of militarism in the region.

Guo Jiakun concluded by urging the Japanese side to heed the calls from the international community, conduct serious soul-searching, and correct its wrongdoings. He said that instead of creating confusion and trouble, Japan should take concrete actions that contribute to regional peace, stability, and respect for historical facts and international commitments.
