China’s Permanent Mission to the United Nations has inaugurated the Group of Friends of Global Governance at the UN headquarters in New York, marking a new step in Beijing’s efforts to promote reform and improvement of the global governance system.
Responding to a question from Beijing Youth Daily, Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesperson Guo Jiakun said President Xi Jinping first proposed the Global Governance Initiative at the SCO Tianjin Summit. According to Guo, the initiative set out a clear direction for reforming the global governance framework and has provided stability and certainty at a time of heightened global turbulence. He noted that the initiative has received extensive recognition and positive responses from the international community.
Guo said China initiated the Group of Friends of Global Governance to bring countries together for closer dialogue and cooperation on major global governance issues. The aim of the group is to draw on collective wisdom, mobilize joint efforts, and contribute to the reform and improvement of global governance.
The inaugural meeting of the group was held at the United Nations headquarters on Tuesday. Representatives from participating countries expressed strong recognition and support for the Global Governance Initiative and commended China’s role in advancing global governance discussions. They also congratulated China on the formal launch of the group and voiced hope that it would inject new momentum into upholding multilateralism and推动改革 and improvement of the global governance system.
Following the meeting, the 43 founding member countries issued a joint statement affirming their commitment to upholding the legacy achieved since the end of the Second World War. The statement emphasized reinforcing the role of the United Nations, addressing global challenges collectively, and responding to the aspirations and needs of people worldwide.
Guo stressed that global governance is a matter that concerns all countries and directly affects the vital interests of every nation. He said it requires broad participation, shared decision-making, and equitable sharing of outcomes. The Group of Friends of Global Governance is open to all UN member states and welcomes the participation of countries that share the same vision.
China also expressed support for the group to strengthen exchanges and cooperation with the UN Secretariat and relevant international organizations. According to Guo, these efforts are aimed at building a more just and equitable global governance system and making new contributions to world peace and global development.
