China Questions Japan’s “Consistent Position” on Taiwan, Urges Tokyo to Reiterate Commitments from 1972 Joint Statement

China has sharply responded to Japan’s latest remarks on the Taiwan question following comments made by a Japanese government spokesperson during the G20 Summit. The spokesperson had dismissed China’s concerns regarding Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi’s recent statements on Taiwan as “entirely baseless,” insisting that Japan’s position remains unchanged and that Tokyo is “committed to dialogue.”

However, the Chinese Foreign Ministry strongly disagrees.

During a press briefing, Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesperson Mao Ning reiterated that China has repeatedly clarified its position on Prime Minister Takaichi’s remarks, emphasizing that her statements seriously violate the principles set out in the four political documents governing China-Japan relations. Mao stated that the comments fundamentally undermine the political foundation between the two countries.

China expressed clear doubts about Japan’s claim of maintaining a “consistent position” on Taiwan. Mao questioned what Japan precisely means by this “consistent position” and urged Tokyo to clearly articulate it to the public. According to China, repeatedly claiming that nothing has changed while simultaneously “crossing the line” amounts to empty rhetoric that erodes the one-China principle.

China emphasized that the one-China principle is the prevailing and unshakeable consensus within the international community. If the Japanese government’s position truly remains unchanged, China argues that Japan should unambiguously reaffirm its commitments outlined in the 1972 Sino-Japanese Joint Statement.

That joint statement includes two key points:

  1. The Government of Japan recognizes the Government of the People’s Republic of China as the sole legal Government of China.

  2. Japan fully understands and respects China’s position that Taiwan is an inalienable part of the People’s Republic of China and maintains its stand in accordance with Article 8 of the Potsdam Proclamation.

China questioned why Tokyo has not been fully and accurately reiterating this established position in its recent explanations.

In its concluding remarks, China urged Japan to take China’s concerns seriously, conduct what it called “serious soul-searching,” and correct its recent “wrongdoing.” Beijing called on Tokyo to honor its commitments, stop sending contradictory signals, and cease pursuing what China describes as a misguided policy approach on Taiwan.

China warned that saying one thing while doing another will only undermine trust and stability in China-Japan relations going forward.
