China Responds to Taiwan’s Remarks on Honduras, Reaffirms One-China Principle

In response to comments from a Taiwan official expressing hopes to reestablish ties with Honduras and noting contact with both presidential candidates ahead of the elections, China has reiterated its firm position on the one-China principle. Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesperson Lin Jian addressed the issue during a press briefing, emphasizing that the political foundation of China-Honduras relations is non-negotiable.

Lin highlighted that since China and Honduras established diplomatic ties more than two years ago, their relationship has advanced rapidly with significant results across multiple sectors. According to the Foreign Ministry, cooperation between the two nations has delivered concrete benefits to the Honduran people and strengthened long-term development prospects.

Among the achievements cited by Lin Jian were the completion of China-built agricultural technique schools in Honduras, which aim to enhance agricultural productivity and skill development. He also noted that Chinese and Honduran enterprises have signed procurement agreements involving over 10,000 tons of whiteleg shrimp, bolstering Honduras’s exports and economic ties with China.

Trade cooperation has expanded in other areas as well. Tobacco from Honduras has officially entered the Chinese market, while China’s import of Honduran coffee surged significantly in 2024, increasing by fourteen times year on year. China has also supported Honduras by offering coffee greenhouses, plantation toolkits, and multiple batches of humanitarian supplies during hurricanes, floods and natural disasters.

Beyond trade and infrastructure, China has provided assistance in human resource development through government scholarships, training programs and cooperation in tourism. Lin stressed that these efforts collectively demonstrate the tangible value of diplomatic ties and align with the fundamental and long-term interests of both countries.

Commenting on Taiwan’s attempt to reconnect with Honduras, Lin Jian said that what he described as “Taiwan independence” separatist activities run counter to historical trends and are ultimately doomed to fail. He reaffirmed that China firmly opposes any actions that challenge the one-China principle and will continue to safeguard national sovereignty and territorial integrity.

China maintains that the partnership with Honduras is based on mutual respect and shared development goals, and Beijing expects future cooperation to deepen regardless of political developments elsewhere.
