Tata's JLR Strengthens EV Supply Chain Resilience with 50 New Specialist Roles Amid Geopolitical Challenges

In a strategic move to bolster the resilience and ethical integrity of its electric vehicle (EV) supply chains, JLR has recently created 50 new specialist roles. The initiative comes as part of JLR’s ongoing transformation to launch a new generation of pure electric vehicles across all its iconic brands by 2030. This expansion in expertise is especially critical in light of persistent geopolitical uncertainty and increasing scrutiny over the sourcing of materials vital to EV production.

These new roles are designed to enhance the company's visibility and control over its supply chains, particularly regarding raw materials such as lithium, cobalt, manganese, nickel, and graphite. These minerals are essential for battery manufacturing and are sourced globally, often from regions facing significant ethical and logistical challenges. With these additions, JLR aims to proactively identify and mitigate risks, ensuring uninterrupted production and adherence to evolving regulatory frameworks.

The newly recruited specialists are tasked with gathering and analyzing key supply chain data to build a comprehensive picture of the origin and movement of parts and materials. This in-depth mapping will allow JLR to anticipate threats, devise strategic solutions, and ensure compliance with both current and future legislation. In doing so, JLR aims to maintain a robust and ethical supply chain that supports its long-term electrification goals.

The move complements JLR’s partnerships with organizations that conduct physical audits at critical material sites, ensuring traceability and ethical sourcing from the ground up. The company is also investing in advanced technologies such as artificial intelligence, machine learning, and real-time analytics to further increase transparency and operational resilience.

Supply chain disruptions have posed significant risks to the automotive industry in recent years, from the Covid-19 pandemic to shipping challenges in the Red Sea and geopolitical conflicts. JLR’s decision to enhance its internal capabilities reflects a proactive stance in learning from past disruptions and preparing for future uncertainties.

Among the newly appointed specialists is Jaspal Gill, who previously worked in various roles within JLR’s Material Planning and Logistics division at Castle Bromwich. Now serving as a Supply Chain Mapping and Transparency Manager, Gill brings hands-on experience in supporting production lines and is dedicated to identifying the true origins of vehicle components to ensure continuity and compliance. Since joining the new team, Gill has also taken on the responsibility of training new members, sharing valuable knowledge, and fostering a culture of continuous learning and adaptability.

Another new addition to the team, Ama Agyewaa Sappor, brings 15 years of deep supply chain expertise to JLR. Her motivation for joining stems from the company's commitment to sustainability and ethical practices. Having grown up in Africa, Sappor is particularly passionate about upstream impacts, including responsible sourcing and the development of sustainable, end-to-end supply chains. She emphasized the importance of visibility, noting that her team’s work directly contributes to JLR’s goal of being a responsible global corporate citizen.

Beyond hiring new specialists, JLR has also focused on building internal capabilities. The company has trained over 20,000 employees in specialist supply chain management areas, including modern slavery awareness and export controls. These efforts are part of JLR’s broader annual investment of £20 million in workforce training, aimed at equipping employees with the skills necessary to support the company’s vision for next-generation luxury electric vehicles.

As JLR accelerates its electrification journey, the integration of skilled professionals and advanced technology into its supply chain framework positions it to lead with both resilience and responsibility in the evolving automotive landscape.
