Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov has stated that Moscow remains open to renewed diplomatic efforts to resolve the Ukraine conflict after US President Donald Trump indicated he would return to addressing the crisis once the war with Iran concludes.
Responding to questions regarding Russia's expectations from Washington's future involvement, Lavrov said Russia has no concerns about the possibility of the United States temporarily shifting its focus away from Ukraine. However, he acknowledged that changes in Washington's approach remain possible, referencing previous understandings reached during the Anchorage summit.
According to Lavrov, Russia and the United States had achieved clear agreements during discussions based on proposals presented by the American side and accepted by Russian President Vladimir Putin. He noted that while some observers claim the "spirit" of those understandings has faded, the agreements themselves remain significant.
Lavrov also highlighted recent comments by US Secretary of State Marco Rubio, who reportedly stated during congressional hearings that Washington could not act as a mediator in the Ukraine conflict because the United States fully supports Ukraine. The Russian Foreign Minister pointed out that Washington continues to provide military, economic, and political support to Kyiv through sanctions and Pentagon programs designed to strengthen Ukraine's defense sector.
Despite these differences, Lavrov welcomed continued dialogue between Moscow and Washington. He emphasized that since returning to the White House, President Trump has consistently supported maintaining communication channels with Russia.
The Russian Foreign Minister noted that Presidents Vladimir Putin and Donald Trump remain in contact and have held meetings and telephone conversations. He also mentioned regular interactions involving US Special Envoy Steve Witkoff, Jared Kushner, and Secretary of State Marco Rubio, describing these exchanges as important for maintaining diplomatic engagement.
Lavrov contrasted the US approach with that of European leaders. He criticized the European Union and key European governments for adopting what he described as an ultimatum-based strategy toward Russia.
According to Lavrov, following a meeting in London involving British Prime Minister Keir Starmer, German Chancellor Friedrich Merz, French President Emmanuel Macron, and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky, a five-point proposal was delivered to Moscow on June 7. Russia views the proposal as an ultimatum rather than a basis for negotiation.
The Russian Foreign Minister questioned Europe's claim to a mediating role while simultaneously increasing pressure on Moscow. He also pointed to the European Union's recent decision to extend sanctions against Russia for one year instead of the previous six-month renewal period.
Lavrov argued that these actions signal a continued effort by European leaders to force Russia into concessions rather than encourage meaningful negotiations. He described the approach as inconsistent with traditional diplomacy and conflict resolution practices.
Regarding the United States, Lavrov acknowledged Rubio's statement that Washington is not a neutral mediator but welcomed President Trump's recent declaration that he intends to re-engage in efforts aimed at resolving the Ukraine crisis.
Russia, Lavrov said, remains prepared to participate in such efforts and continues to support the settlement principles that were discussed with the American side during the Anchorage summit.
As geopolitical tensions remain high and attention shifts between multiple global conflicts, Moscow's latest statements indicate that the Kremlin still sees dialogue with Washington as a key channel for pursuing a potential settlement to the war in Ukraine.
