Here’s Why Donald Trump Is Always Obsessed with the Nobel Peace Prize

Donald Trump’s fascination with the Nobel Peace Prize has been an open secret for years. Throughout both of his presidential terms, he has repeatedly voiced his desire—and perceived entitlement—to the prestigious award. From public speeches to social media posts, Trump has made his aspirations crystal clear, often referencing the prize in connection to his efforts in international diplomacy.

Recently, Trump’s name was officially submitted for Nobel Peace Prize consideration by U.S. Representative Buddy Carter from Georgia. The nomination came on the heels of Trump's announcement of a ceasefire deal between Israel and Iran—an achievement he claimed as a major diplomatic breakthrough.

However, things took a dramatic turn when Alexander Misque, a top Ukrainian lawmaker and the head of Ukraine's parliamentary foreign committee, withdrew his own nomination of Trump. Misque publicly stated that he had "lost any sort of faith in Trump and his ability to secure a ceasefire deal between Russia and Ukraine."

This wasn’t the first time Trump’s Nobel hopes hit a snag. Pakistan had also once stated that it would nominate Trump for reducing tensions between India and Pakistan. But that recognition faded just as quickly when the U.S. conducted airstrikes on Iran. Following the strikes, Pakistan condemned the American actions and rolled back on its praise and potential nomination.

Despite these setbacks, Trump has continued to portray himself as the peacemaker of the world. He often references his supposed role in preventing a full-scale war between India and Pakistan. However, the Indian government has denied any U.S. mediation. According to official statements, peace talks were held directly between the two countries' Director Generals of Military Operations (DGMOs), with no involvement from Washington.

Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi even fact-checked Trump’s claims, clarifying that the U.S. had no role in the discussions. Nonetheless, Trump continued to boast about his involvement and, in one social media post, mentioned the Nobel Peace Prize six times—asserting that he deserved the award four to five times over.

His obsession with the Nobel Prize also seems tied to former President Barack Obama, who won the award in 2009—just nine months into his presidency. Trump has repeatedly criticized the Nobel Committee for giving the award to Obama, suggesting that the decision was politically motivated.

In 2019, Trump stated that he wouldn’t receive the prize because “they don’t give it out fairly.” He went on to claim that if his name were Obama and he had accomplished the same things, he would have already received it.

As for Trump’s claims of ending global conflicts, critics point out that many of his promises remain unfulfilled. The Russia-Ukraine war still rages on, and a comprehensive peace deal in West Asia is far from reality. Though Trump announced a ceasefire between Israel and Iran, the situation quickly escalated again after Israeli strikes resumed. Trump did, however, thank Qatar for helping mediate the temporary truce, calling the country instrumental in the ceasefire negotiations.

Despite the controversy and criticism, Trump continues to push his narrative. Whether or not his efforts will ever earn him the Nobel Peace Prize remains uncertain. But one thing is clear—his obsession with the award, and with being seen as a global peacemaker, shows no signs of slowing down.
