In a clear and calculated response to mounting pressure from the United States, Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi has reaffirmed India's commitment to safeguarding its national interests, particularly in the areas of agriculture, micro, small, and medium enterprises (MSMEs), and domestic manufacturing.
Speaking at a public rally in Varanasi, PM Modi delivered a pointed message without directly naming the US or President Donald Trump. His statements, however, were widely seen as a strong rebuttal to recent American actions and comments. President Trump had recently imposed a sweeping 25% tariff on all Indian exports to the US starting from August 7, 2025, with no exemptions. In addition, Trump had publicly questioned the strength of the Indian economy, calling it a "dead economy," and criticized India’s growing ties with Russia.
Responding to these developments, PM Modi declared that India will always put its own interests first. He emphasized that the welfare of Indian farmers, MSMEs, and the youth is non-negotiable. “India is on the verge of becoming the world’s third-largest economy,” he stated, asserting confidence in the country’s economic trajectory. "Just like every other nation is focusing on its own interests, India too will focus on its economic interests."
The Prime Minister further stated that the Indian government is taking every possible step to protect domestic industries from unfair foreign pressure. He reassured citizens that under no circumstances will Indian farmers or MSMEs be allowed to suffer losses due to international trade policies or external influences.
While PM Modi refrained from taking President Trump’s name directly, his message was unmistakable. The comments were widely interpreted as a strategic diplomatic response to US pressure, especially in the context of recent trade negotiations where the US has been pushing India to open its markets to American agricultural products. India, however, has resisted such demands, aiming to shield its farmers and domestic producers from potential harm.
PM Modi also made a passionate appeal to Indian citizens to support indigenous products and prioritize swadeshi (locally made) goods. He encouraged people to adopt the "vocal for local" mantra and support the "Make in India" initiative wholeheartedly. He underlined that Indian citizens should choose products that are the result of Indian skills, labor, and innovation. “Every Indian must pledge to buy products made by Indians. If someone has poured their sweat into making something, that product deserves our support,” Modi said.
The Prime Minister called on all political leaders, regardless of their affiliations, to rise above hesitation and instill a sense of national economic responsibility among citizens. He emphasized that building a strong domestic economy requires collective effort and a shared commitment to self-reliance.
This speech comes at a time when US-India trade relations are under significant strain. Washington’s imposition of tariffs, along with public remarks targeting India’s economic performance and foreign policy decisions, has raised tensions. By sending a firm but diplomatic signal, PM Modi made it clear that India will not be coerced into trade deals that undermine its domestic priorities.
With India standing on the cusp of becoming the world’s third-largest economy, the government’s current stance reflects a broader policy shift towards economic nationalism and strategic autonomy. As trade tensions escalate, India appears more determined than ever to stand its ground and protect the interests of its people.
