
India’s auto industry witnessed mixed sales trends in August 2025, with some manufacturers reporting healthy double-digit growth while others saw a decline in volumes. The month highlighted contrasting performances between domestic and export markets, with exports showing strong traction for several companies.
Hero MotoCorp reported an 8% rise in total sales at 5.54 lakh units compared to 5.13 lakh units in the same month last year. Domestic sales grew 5.5% to 5.19 lakh units from 4.92 lakh units, while exports surged 72% to 34,588 units against 20,097 units.
Hyundai Motor Co reported a decline, with total sales falling 4.2% to 60,501 units against 63,175 units last year.
Maruti Suzuki also posted a marginal drop of 0.6% in overall sales at 1.81 lakh units versus 1.82 lakh units. Domestic sales were down 7.1% at 1.44 lakh units compared to 1.55 lakh units, while exports provided some relief, rising 40.5% to 36,538 units from 26,003 units.
Tata Motors saw a modest 2% growth in overall sales at 73,178 units versus 71,693 units. Commercial vehicle sales increased 10% to 29,863 units from 27,207 units, but passenger vehicle sales, including EVs, declined 3% to 43,315 units from 44,486 units.
Eicher Motors delivered a strong performance with total VECV sales up 9.5% at 7,167 units against 6,543 units. The company’s motorcycle division also recorded robust growth, with bike sales surging 55% to 1.14 lakh units from 73,629 units. Its international business expanded 39% to 11,126 units compared to 8,006 units.
Mahindra & Mahindra reported total auto sales of 75,901 units, almost flat compared to last year and below CNBC-TV18’s poll estimate of 79,167 units. Domestic passenger vehicle sales fell 9% to 39,399 units against 43,277 units.
On the positive side, three-wheeler sales rose 13% to 10,527 units from 9,326 units, while exports grew 16% to 3,548 units versus 3,060 units. In the farm equipment segment, M&M registered a sharp 28% jump in tractor sales at 28,117 units compared to 21,917 units last year.
TVS Motor Company posted impressive growth with total sales up 30% at 5.09 lakh units versus 3.91 lakh units. Two-wheeler sales also rose 30% to 4.90 lakh units from 3.78 lakh units, with domestic sales up 28% at 3.68 lakh units against 2.89 lakh units. EV sales edged up 1.45% to 25,138 units from 24,779 units, while exports surged 35% to 1.35 lakh units compared to 99,976 units. Three-wheeler sales grew 47% to 18,748 units against 12,747 units.
Ashok Leyland’s overall sales rose 5% to 15,239 units versus 14,463 units. Medium and heavy commercial vehicle sales grew 8% to 9,381 units against 8,663 units.
Bajaj Auto witnessed a mixed trend. Domestic sales fell 8% to 2.32 lakh units compared to 2.53 lakh units, but exports jumped 29% to 1.85 lakh units from 1.43 lakh units.
Overall, the auto industry reported total sales of 4.17 lakh units in August, up 5% from 3.97 lakh units last year. While exports provided a boost for several automakers, the domestic passenger vehicle segment showed signs of weakness, reflecting subdued consumer demand ahead of the festive season.
