Beijing – The Chinese Foreign Ministry has issued a strong response to recent remarks made by U.S. President Donald Trump, who alleged that China has been conducting secret nuclear weapons tests.
During a press briefing, Foreign Ministry spokesperson Mao Ning rejected the claim, emphasizing China’s responsible stance as a nuclear-weapon state and its consistent commitment to global peace and stability.
Mao Ning stated that as a permanent member of the UN Security Council and a responsible nuclear-weapon state, China is committed to peaceful development and adheres to a policy of “no first use” of nuclear weapons. She further underlined that China’s nuclear strategy is purely defensive in nature and guided by self-defense principles.
She reaffirmed that China strictly observes its moratorium on nuclear testing, highlighting that the country’s actions align fully with its obligations under international treaties. “China stands ready to work with all parties to jointly uphold the authority of the Comprehensive Nuclear Test-Ban Treaty and safeguard the international nuclear disarmament and non-proliferation regime,” Mao said.
The spokesperson also urged the United States to abide by its own commitments under the Comprehensive Nuclear Test-Ban Treaty (CTBT) and to honor its pledge to maintain a moratorium on nuclear testing. “It’s hoped that the U.S. will earnestly abide by its obligations under the Treaty and take concrete actions to uphold the international nuclear disarmament and non-proliferation regime, as well as global strategic balance and stability,” she added.
The remarks come amid heightened tensions between Washington and Beijing over nuclear policy and arms control issues, following President Trump’s recent announcement that the U.S. would resume nuclear testing for the first time in more than three decades.
Analysts say China’s measured response signals its intent to maintain diplomatic composure while reaffirming its global image as a responsible power committed to peace, dialogue, and multilateralism.
